What is all this XTERRA Stuff?

XTERRA is the brand name of TEAM Unlimited’s off-road triathlon race series.  If you’re looking for a great low-key event that is the most fun you’ll have with your tri shorts on, check it out.

XTERRA Sport, these half-distance races offer newcomers a good introduction to off-road triathlon. The courses generally consist of a 500-meter swim, a 15-kilometer mountain bike, and 5-kilometer trail run, and you may race as an individual or a team. You can find these at the four Xterra USA Championship Series races in the USA Championship Series: Xterra East, Mountain, West, and Southeast Championships, plus the XTERRA Nevada at the USA Championship in Lake Tahoe, NV.

The Xterra points series is the method most athletes will use to get to the USA Championship.  By placing in your age group, you will gain points toward regional and national ranking, and by gaining enough points, an entry slot into the USA race.  These races are all over the country—there are over 50 points series races this year! The full-distance XTERRA races are generally comprised of a 1.5K swim, 30K mountain bike and a 10K trail run. You may also race as an individual or a team in these.  Athletes who wish to race in the Xterra USA Championship Series for points toward an XTERRA regional or national title will use these races to get their points.  Points are given in each age group based on the number of competitors and your place in your age group at these races.  A top age-group place will also give you entry into the Xterra World Championship.

The Global Tour includes stops in fourteen countries, and it’s growing. The races are open to both Pro and amateur competitors.  Amateurs can race toward entry to the Xterra World Championship at the Makena Resort, Maui. Pros compete for prize purses. For more information on racing Xterra, on race schedules or the points series, check out www.xterraplanet.com/races

Until then, have fun and keep the rubber side down.

Brian
