I have never actually done a time trial before this week, but I suppose a race is kind of like a time trial with no one to beat but yourself. With that in mind, I headed up Mt. Lemmon for the first time in my life. Ever. I have never been up Mt. Lemmon even in a car, so on a bike was quite intimidating. Kyle was kind enough to drive me there and stop at every pull-out to yell encouraging words as I glared at him. What a trooper! My mind got tricked by my bike computer, which I have trouble seeing. I thought it was reading one mph (!). I was horrified that the two mile climb would take me two hours, and pedaled hard to speed up (turns out I was going 7 mph). I made it to the 2.7 mile mark that was to be the end, totally shocked that I had gotten there. A year ago – nay, a month ago – I could not have climbed those hills to Babad Do’ag given two days, a motorized escort and my own personal water truck. Today I did it in under 20 minutes, feeling fine the whole way and waiting for the hills to start getting bad. I was shocked! God Bless the One-Leg Drill. I also made it under 40 minutes in the final aquathlon of the season (39:16!), mostly due to me moving a bit faster in the water. What a great week! I can’t wait to see how I improve during the next 4 weeks.
