Sunday, Muddy Sunday |

A couple of months ago, in a fit of optimism, I agreed to be one of the stooges on a friend's 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo team. 24HOP (for those in the know) is a mountain bike race that happens north of Tucson every February when the weather has its best chance of doing a Midwest imitation. As it turns out, this year it's cold, rainy, muddy, miserable etc. The race actually happens tomorrow at noon and goes until Sunday at noon, but already my four man team is down to a three man team, and the whole southern half of Arizona is covered in mu-mu-mu-MUD. I was just out at the race site dropping off one of the other guys on the team at the team's borrowed RV--hope the owner took a hefty cleaning deposit-yowza! The place looked like that scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail where King Arthur is discussing political philosophy with the peasants who are doing God-knows-what in the mud. The difference is that at the 24 Hour race site, everyone had a gortex jacket and most people had a beer in their hand (gotta love mountain bikers). Anyway, on the way out, as I was sliding sideways through the mud bog that used to be the road to the race site, I thought to myself that there was no way in hell I was going to go back to do the race. Uh uh. No way. But then I sat down with my wife and some friends and had a couple of glasses of wine. They all told me what a fool I was for thinking about doing the race in the first place, and now I don't want to do anything else in the world but. So, expect a rip-roarin' race report on Monday. If I'm capable of typing.
