Beach running – how this was ever portrayed as fun or glorious is beyond me, but I am sure I have seen it depicted so in movies. This morning as I tried to pull my legs out of Tucson’s version of the La Brea tar pits (a fascinating place, by the way, to visit), I was thinking “Wow, I hate sand”. Couple my hatred of sand with my obvious aversion to water and you’ve got yourself a non-beach-going, sore Hamstring-having, very pale gal. Although I got some nice burns at IMAZ, I still have no tan to speak of. But I digress. This morning Lincoln Park served as the backdrop for the lovely Spring Cross Country Classic, put on by local running club SAR. Last year when I ran this race I felt great and in fact was a bit chilly because it was drizzling. That drizzle, I see now, masked an underlying ugliness that is Lincoln Park – sand. Trying to run uphill in loose sand and varied gravel made for a challenging run on an otherwise flat and fast course. I slogged through the sand as best I could, but my time was still a minute off from last year’s. Slow time notwithstanding, I had a great race and even beat my running nemesis (What? You don’t have one?). Next year I am going to do a little rain dance prior to this race to stamp down that sand. In the mean time my hamstrings are screaming that I should probably employ some hill training before running around trying to be fast again. Next up: Cinco de Mayo 10K! Happy training!
