SOMA 2008

Written by Holly

This was SOMA weekend in Tempe with the kids with us and our new wagon!

The race stats: 44 minute swim (1.2 miles), 3:03 bike (56 miles), 1:57 run (13.1 miles). FInish: 5:50.

Water temp was 68 degrees, I wore my sleeved wetsuit; wasted some energy worrying about the cold water, which wasn't. I had much more trouble than usual finding clear water to swim in, though. When I was realllly slow, it was usually me, my “Are-you-drowning-Ma’am?” kayak, and a chubby old guy swimming in the back. This time it was me, a few hundred same-pace swimmers, a wayward buoy and a chubby old guy. I got out of the water in 44 minutes. T1 with my chubby buddy (he's on my left - and, he deserves props for raising money for TNT and getting out there, good job chubby buddy!):

The bike has been my downfall in pretty much every race I have ever done, so I was determined to really push my comfort zone on the bike. No coasting, no gliding, and no going under 11 mph for anything. I grabbed a water bottle from a volunteer and noticed I was going 16 - excellent work, volunteer!I thought I was near the very back of the people doing the half, but kept telling myself I’d catch people on the run. I ended up finishing the bike in 3:03, an hour improvement over my last SOMA attempt.

Quick transition to tie on my Mizuno kicks and off I went, thrilled as usual to be off the bike. I ran a few 8:15 miles before realizing this was a 13.1 mile run. I slowed the pace, took in some nutrition, and kept a fairly consistent 9 min pace (except for when I saw the kids and got high fives, I added a couple minutes on to that mile), then I finished with an 8:14. Cody (Jen's daughter) ran with me briefly:

The final tiny hill:

I had a blast, and I’m somewhat relieved to know Ironman will likely not be a disaster. Post-race, there were beans and rice and some cookies. I stole many cookies and ate no rice or beans (though I did carry it around for a while). Me, my beans, and Jen after the finish:

Kyle had the kids the whole time and was awesome about not complaining. Thanks, Kyle!! :)
