I met with Coach Jeff to get a pre-training assessment and to get video taped swimming. The idea here being that I could make a bunch of small improvements right off the bat in both my riding and swimming to get my training started right. I arrived ready to swim, bike, and run; bike in hand. In just under an hour, Coach Jeff had taken my bike seat post off (twice) and replaced it with one that made it possible for me to sit much further forward than I have before (I ride my bike like Jessica Fletcher normally. What a kick ass bike she had.). Once my position was correct, Jeff tossed around enough bike terms to make my head spin, including but not limited to: spindle, cable, big gear, compact, crank, fore, aft, and my personal favorite “that little thingy”. I practiced some drills next, all of which are meant to make me feel like a weak, weak little girl. Or build strength, I forget which. My bike lesson was followed by some stretching (which, apparently, I am to be doing after everything), pliometrics and active isolated stretching (or “OUCH” for short). All of this was mostly new to me, so I will be working on putting it together with my current routine of “eat food and sit on couch post-workout”. It should be a nice wake-up call. Following my schooling in flexibility (Coach Jeff is wicked stretchy for a guy!), I was allowed to run for ten seconds to build some confidence. And with that, we headed to the pool. Underwater swim video is not for the weak. You must be prepared to see all of your jiggly self from every angle imaginable. You must be able to ignore said jiggly self and focus on how crappily you swim. For the filming, I swam back and forth and got several tips for moving faster in the water (breathe more often, cobble together an efficient pull, stop kicking like a psycho). Armed with my new bag of tricks I was allowed to exit the water. My guess is I am expected to reenter the water soon. Following the swim lesson we watched the actual video of me “swimming” and I was able to see that Jeff was right and I could improve a lot with just a few adjustments. I left with a huge load of stuff to try and buy (swim fins, seat post, paddles, and pull buoy), and a very positive attitude towards training in general. I’m not as terrible as I had thought, and the bike riding alone is going to make me stronger. I am eager to start applying what I learned to my training! Remind me later how upbeat I was at this point…
