Iron Distance Swim

Written by Holly
Monday, 10 November 2008

This Sunday was the 2.4 Mile Open Water swim in Tempe Town Lake put on by DCB Adventures (motto: we don't even pretend to care if your race shirt will fit!). Seriously, though, I am thankful for this event, as it provides a needed confidence booster. Travel back to April with me, if you will:

Five weeks post partum, out of shape and stuffed into a wetsuit I jumped into the lake. I emerged in 1:49:45, one hour and forty-nine minutes after I got into the water, covered in black stuff (?) and exhuasted. Elaine was there, dressed and dry, eating something and talking with Zac. Michelle and Scott were there, dry also. I was so proud of myself, I didn't even notice that there were only 12 people left in the water. I had finished 352 out of 364.

Fast forward to yesterday. I was ready for this swim, confident that I could swim the distance without difficulty and armed with goals. Swim relaxed, swim straight, and draft. I managed to remind myself to relax, and I swam so straight I went directly under both outward buoys, but I only drafted maybe 10% of the swim.

I emerged from my second Lap (new to me- I've never done a loop course in water) in 1:21:56.  Twenty-eight minutes faster than April. 106 out of 200, plenty of people out there still swimming. I was 37th out of 81 women. I know, enough with the stats already. But, !!! Best of all, Michelle and Scott were still in their wetsuits, and I felt absolutely fine - like I could go ride a bike for a bit. :)

I am ready for this race now!! Even if I get lost in the 2000 racers at IMAZ, I think I can pull off a 1:30 and still have 20 more minutes than last year to spend riding my bike. And that oughta be very different as well.

While I was in Tempe, I drove the whole bike course. Not that it is new to me, but I needed to know where I was turning around and making turns in my head. I'm ready for you, Beeline!
