Fleet Feet AZ Trail Run Race Report

Written by Holly
Monday, 04 February 2008
Kyle and I woke up early and both of us were ambivalent about actually going to this race- Kyle had worked late and I was thinking of how cold we would be out there (last year was COLD). However, peer pressure and a desire to have my second finisher shirt from this race got me out of bed, and I’m so glad we got to Colossal Cave this Sunday to run this race. The weather was perfect, not too chilly or warm, and besides that, this race is cool! As a change this year, the race was tweaked to include an uphill start (to thin out the runners for the trail head) and made to be a full 8 miles. I have to say the changes were an improvement, as we only bottle necked once and it didn’t last long.

Kyle (who sacrificed personal pride to stay with me and never breathed a word of negativity even when we were vying for 5th-to-last place with a slightly tubby older gentleman) and I stayed WELL to the back, knowing we would be safely walking any technical parts and most up hills. This strategy worked wonderfully and we got to see the leaders come back on the trail near the 6 mile mark – they were flying!

This trail is so nice, and well kept and the course was marked well (of course, moving as slowly as we were we could have read pebbles lined up to make words if need be). I would probably never go out and run this trail if it weren’t for this race, so I’m thankful to Everyone Runs and Fleet Feet for making the effort to put on a race here. Jeanne and Pete from Fleet Feet put on a great race, with personalized attention (I’m pretty sure I was on the paramedic’s radar for the whole race, thanks to a very motherly Jeanne!) and technical long-sleeve t-shirts (FINISHER shirts!), AND free breakfast at the end.

Overall, this was obviously not a PR but was a great morning again spent with Kyle and some TriGirls who went super fast- Rachel H. took third (I told you so!) in her age division, and I saw Janice, Shari, Sheryl out there as well. Some were even still there when I finished, which is always nice to see! If you missed this year’s race (cough, Alison), be sure to get out there next year - it is sure to sell out quickly!

Happy Training.
