I have received my Mach3 training plan and while my initial reaction was a bit of nausea with a headache, I have warmed to the idea of twice-daily workouts and more Core work than I 've ever done in my life. Alright, I'm luke warm. Last night's aquathlon was sort of a test for me – I have started training for Ironman and recently had an underwater swim videotape done by Mach3Multisport’s Jeff Orr (of Jeff and Bizzy fame). Seeing my form mistakes on TV (goodbye, ego!) made it easier to correct some errors, and I was hoping to employ my newfound brilliance in the water last night. I forgot that it is easy to correct anything for 25 yards, more challenging to do so for 800 yards. I also forgot that I have yet to use the muscles necessary to swim well (ever.) and using them causes them to burn. More practice is needed. However, I still took 15 seconds off my best swim time this summer, and I felt like I was swimming correctly for most of that. Relaxing, pulling effectively and efficiently, and kicking less like a crazy person are the things I need to really think about to make me move in the water. I even did two flip turns, but chickened out flipping in the shallow end- a concussion is so not cool for date night (unless you're in your 20s, then it's cool). Swim completed, I tossed myself onto the swim deck not unlike a whale beaching itself and found some socks and shoes to put on. I spent about 30 seconds in transition, which is longer than I’d like but better than my first 2 minute transition. I had a strong-ish run and felt like I could have pushed harder if I needed to (if, for instance, a bear or mountain lion were in pursuit). I ended the evening feeling like I am getting better, which is a good feeling. I am getting close to my goal of breaking 40:00 minutes in the aquathlon, if only the summer were longer! Holly J.
