Tiny people in sombreros, mariachi men sweating in the shade and free burritos? I’m in! This is my second time running this race, held at Cholla High School off Starr Pass Blvd. I arrived early and had some time to hit the porta potties, catch up on some race reports, and find my place in the start area. I knew many people who were planning to run either the 2-mile or the 10K, but somehow I didn’t see but a couple of them until the race was over. The race began on time, and uphill. This course is all rolling hills; very well marked with a huge running lane. Admittedly, we were outside the cones but the cars didn’t honk so it couldn’t have annoyed them that much. Water was on the course, competently handed out by volunteers. The course is out-and-back so it offers the chance to see the super-speedy folks and the not-so-speedy folks as you head out or come back. I saw at least two moms out there with jogging strollers and gave them props- this was hilly! I ran the same time as last year and felt good - though it did start to get hot near the end. The finish is a screaming fast downhill with spectators and some crazy-haired guy on the mic, so everyone gets to feel like a rock star, and there were tons of runners out there. A kids' run featured sombrero-clad youngsters running around in circles.
I stayed to get my free burrito and fruit (long line, totally worth it!) and headed home, happy to cross one more Grand Prix race off my calendar. For those who are keeping track (I believe that would be only me…), I am fairly sure I beat my nemesis this morning too. A good day!
