Since we pay millions of dollars for a babysitter, we decided to forego the usual “dinner out” and have date night at the Aquathlon – we will definitely be doing this again! I got to meet some new TriGirls and chat with friends while mentally putting together the perfect body (Lisa-Anne’s arms, Elaine’s abs, Rane’s calfs – these gals are ridiculous!). If you haven’t come out to the aquathlons before, do so this summer!
My goal for this race was to swim as though I knew what I was doing, staying on Polly’s pregnant heels, then kick out a fast 5K. My marathon is Sunday, so I’ve been tapering the past two weeks and not doing much speed work, so I figured I was due. Sticking with Polly in the swim gave me a 17:05 swim which is, sadly, one of my faster times for this distance. I had planned to wear a tank top over my suit top for the run because, well, stuff isn’t quite back to pre-baby and I’m insecure. However, my husband had moved my shirt before going to count laps (have someone count your laps- it is SO MUCH EASIER), and I couldn’t find it. As a result I eff-ed around for 2 full minutes looking for my shirt while pulling on my socks and tying my shoes (couldn’t find my quick laces – bad!). I finally started the run and felt that familiar lightness that goes with not quite feeling your legs moving. I passed some people on the run, careful to give encouragement when doing so, and was doing well until I had to stop and tie my shoes at the one mile (seriously, I need to find some quick laces!). I tied and ran, then saw Tina and Tri-Guy Mike coming towards me (they had already made the turnaround). I made it to the turn around (well marked as usual) and headed back, trying to catch a glimpse of Tina again. I finished a ways behind Tina, but felt like I had a very strong run. This was a great stress relief for the marathon! I can’t say enough good things about these races- for $5 you get to have a weekly timed effort in the water and on the run, and they feed you! SO, as of yesterday, Aquathlon season has begun! Toss your insecurities to the wayside and get out your quick laces- Rane is bringing us another summer of swim and run madness! Whether you swim fast or barely swim at all (follow me! I will lead you to the slow-ass swimming lane!), these 800-yard swims followed by a 5K run are fun for everyone. Kids can compete in an abbreviated event on select Mondays – check it out at www.swimandrun.com !!
