The Aquathlon season has begun! And with it my own personal dread of getting into a pool in front of really fast swimmers and flailing about for 800 yards. One might think this kind of humiliation would lead me to improve my swim over the winter so as to enter the Aquathlon season ready to tear it up in the fast lane. Sadly, no. So, woefully unprepared and decidedly chicken-like, I made my way to the Aquathlon last night. I've been swimming so often lately ( read: not at all), I had to borrow a pair of goggles, as mine were lost. Word to the wise - try loaner goggles on prior to racing in them. For those who are new to the Aquathlon scene, let me tell you, Rane puts on a first-class, twice-weekly event. I dare say, she's got Tri Girls Organized (TGO) down pat. Arrive Monday or Wednesday nights at the Randolph pool at 6:00 p.m., sign up and pay your $5, socialize and hang out until you get your lane assignment at 7:00 and get your butt in the water. Being that I am what I like to call "not so fast" in the water, I was in the first wave (Rane pulls no punches, she lets you know the order of swimming "Slow, Medium-slow, then Fast" - though the order changes from week to week). I was happy to be in a lane with Tina B., fellow TTG and two folks I didn't know. Lisa Anne was in a nearby lane, and Elaine and Sue made it into the faster wave. We were off, and while I spent a few seconds at each end of the lane trying to get the loaner goggles to form some sort of suction around my right eye, I got lapped by Tina; but I held off the other people in my lane to finish in a kinda sad 18:something. Here's the best part of this event, though: the run! The run follows the footpath as an out and back 3 miler. Flat, fast, and filled with walkers and runners who for the most part stay to one side. The turnaround is just before 22nd (look down and you'll see chalk art - now go back!), and you make your way back to where you started and finish in a blaze of glory next to a table full of fresh fruit, cookies, pretzels and water. For $5, a better feast cannot be had. This was only the second week of the Aquathlons, and they run all summer long. Do 5 of them and you get a t-shirt and entry into the Championship, which is crazy fun and usually involves some scavenger hunting. If you're nervous about the swim or think you'll just hold every body up, think again! Swimmers of all abilities are out there and it is an excellent short workout with very encouraging folks and you'll end the summer with more friends than you started it with. Bring the kids- Monday nights they can do a shorter version of the swim and run course. See you out there!! Happy Training!
