A Bleacher and a Wall...

Written by Susan Degan

I've been training for the 70.3 for a little over a month now and I've actually been doing pretty well. I did about 90% of the December workouts, which for me is great, and I'm starting to see results. My body is getting stronger and I feel more confident, especially on the bike. I've had two rides in the last week that have been done in very windy conditions and I felt great on both of them. I'm still slow, but a faster slow if that makes any sense.

Naturally, a big concern is staying healthy and injury free. I'm fighting a little scratchy throat thing right now, but I'm still able to do my workouts, which is great. The injury portion is a little more complex...this past week I've injured myself twice, but neither while training.

The first happened Thursday night. My son and I went to the UofA basketball game...I love college basketball, especially the Wildcats, so was thrilled to be at the game. We got there a little early to watch warm ups. We found our row and as I started to walk toward our seats, I looked down to the court to see who knows what and I walked into the metal arm rest. With my right thigh. I screamed "Ow!" pretty loudly, then played it off like it didn't hurt and strode the rest of the way to my seat. I then felt my leg...it was already welting up. I now have a lovely purple, yellow, blue mark on my thigh, but, it did not impede any of my workouts. Whoo Hoo!

This brings us to yesterday and my encounter w/ a wall. I was playing w/ Dakota, racing back and forth from the living room, through the kitchen, into the family room and back. Occasionally, I would race down the hall. Well, when you go from the kitchen to the hall, it's a bit tricky, but it is something I have manuvered successfully for the past 12 years. Before I got a tall foot board on my bed, I could go from the family room, through the kitchen, down the hall, then launch myself from my doorway onto my bed...fun stuff. So, Dakota and I were in the family room and I took off thru the kitchen as usual and was manuvering thru the kitchen doorway when BAM, my left knee struck the corner of the doorway. I made it to the end of the hall before the pain hit and then I thought I was going to throw up. It HURT. So now I have a golf ball sized bump on my left knee cap. I can walk without limping most of the time, but I'm not sure how it will feel while running. What a dork, huh? My workouts today are to bike and swim; the swim will be fine, but I'm a little worried about the bike. I think I'll do my 45 mins on the trainor and take it a little easy, just to make sure it will be okay.

You know, I don't mind if I get injured while training, it comes w/ sport, but these I mind. I'd like to say I'll be more careful, but sheesch, I really wasn't doing anything...in the back of my head I hear my mother, "watch where you're going" and "don't run in the house!" It's dawning on me that maybe she's right. I'll have to call and tell her...she'll be thrilled!

Happy Training and hey, be careful out there!
